Toys

Lots of things can be used for rat toys. An old sock with the bottom cut off can be hung in the cage and used as a hammock. A non-treated tree doubles as a perch and a chew toy, but make sure that the wood is non-toxic. Bird toys, especially ladders, can also be used for rats. Anything that they can crawl in or through is a great toy. These can be things as nice as those stuffed rodent houses they sell at pet stores, or as simple as a shoe-box with a hole cut in it, because it doesn't matter to the rat how much money you spent on it. The only thing to consider is that the store-bought plastic ones tend to be a little easier to clean, but not always. I like to make sure that there are little peep holes as well as a main entry hole, because that's what my rats seem to like. Experiment and find out what your rats are happy with. Make sure their cage is always interesting and safe, and change/add toys often to keep them entertained.
